Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio), also known as Palace Square (Terreiro do Paço) is a majestic suqare in downtown Lisbon, and was once one of the main maritime points of entry into the city. At the center of the square stands a statue of King José I, erected after the great 1755 earthquake and tsunami that almost completely destroyed Lisbon. To the north stands an imponent 19th century arch leadung to Rua Augusta.
